This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Roman Cup!
The Off The Wall team decided we needed to change the format for the Year 5 and 6 competition due to such high numbers of schools wanting to compete. As a trial we separated the Year 5 and Year 6 competitions so they were on different days. Last Thursday we had the Year 5 Finals with 92 players competing, the Garrison was noisy, energetic and adrenaline pumped. We had 14 schools competing with 21 teams in total, each consisting of 2 boys and 2 girls.
“The standard of play was the highest we’ve ever seen for Year 5s and is testament to the coaching received in schools and the consistency of their squash programmes since Year 3 and some schools since reception class.”
Lauren Selby, Director of Coaching
The Roman Cup Results
The overall team title went to local school Layer de la Haye, who fought for every point and showed fantastic team spirit. Noah Selby from Layer stormed away with the prize for Best Boy along with the Saskia Morrison who won the overall Best Girl by only 2 points between the two other girls behind her.
In the Silver group Ardleigh dominated proceedings and came away as winners. The Bronze group was won by Mistley, which was amzingly their first time playing in the Roman Cup. What they lacked in experience they made up for in effort and perseverance!
Congratulations to all the children who took part in the Year 5 event, all the participants showed wonderful sportsmanship and respect for their opponents, the referees and their teachers.
We’d like to say a BIG thank you to Victor Dahdaleh for kindly sponsoring the event and to 305 for supplying t-shirts for all the children.
