A new school year brings more Roman Cup action!

November/December is our window for Year 5 and 6 squash. The popularity and success of our Primary School Squash Programme has meant that, in recent years, we’ve split the year groups to have their own competitions.

Year 5 begins proceedings, with 1 afternoon of prelimary matches, before the finals day 2 weeks later, when they’re split into groups based on ability and where they finished up after the first round. Year 6 start their competition the following week…

As always, there’s a briefing chat from Director of Coaching Lauren Selby, whilst excited/nervous/raring-to-go children listen on. The players then rush to their courts, with parents/teachers/helpers watching and cheering along behind the glass courts.

After many cycles of the Roman Cup, we can see lots of faces returning from previous competitions (which tends to age us all a tad when we see how grown up and much taller they all are!). The standard of squash across the board now is SERIOUSLY impressive, with groups often being won by just a couple of points!

“What a great event again this year for the year five Roman Cup tournament. The team at Off the Wall were as fantastic as ever, super organised and wonderfully supportive to all the children.

Our teams were very excited to be taking part and enjoyed the experience of playing on real squash courts.
Well done team ‘Off The Wall’, we look forward to next year. “

The Roman Cup Results

Incredibly, the Year 6 Platinum Group resulted in Colchester High and Layer 1 finishing on the same points!! This is the first time this has happened in the 13 years of the Roman Cup. Because Colchester High beat Layer in their head to head, Colchester High were crowned overall winners.

A monumental effort by all players, with so many close battles. We also gave out sportsmanship awards, most improved players to the boys and girls, best boy and girl awards, and this year we introduced runners up for best boys/girls too.

Every player received an invitation to 1 free month at the Garrison, as well as tournament t-shirts. All the coaches and volunteers were so impressed by everyone’s matchplay and behaviour. We hope to see lots more faces at the academy soon!

“I’ve had the pleasure over the last 12/13 years to take some of children from Langham Primary School to the Roman cup, it’s an amazing experience for them & it’s good to see them flourish outside of the school environment! Well done again Off The Wall Squash “

Ms Holdbrook, Langham Primary School Teacher
